IPRS TALK: Strategic Communication Revisited –
Towards a Comprehensive Understanding of the Field

Everybody talks about strategic communication today – but what is it actually about? Is it just old wine in new bottles? Are all PR practitioners and content specialists only concerned with issues of utmost importance for the competitiveness and survival of their employers or customers, and does it make sense to neglect operative work? And isn’t the idea already obsolete again, because strategies in today’s agile organizations are often emergent and no longer planned top down? Ansgar Zerfass gives an overview of the current discussion on an international level, warns against overstretching the concept and gives examples of what strategic communication essentially means, why it is important, why operational communication should not be neglected. The presentation is based on results of expert panels and publications in the International Communication Association (ICA) and the International Journal of Strategic Communication (IJSC).

IPRS TALK: Dangers of Deployment – AI and the Ethical Challenges Ahead
The pandemic caused a paradigm shift for millions with a leap to digital they never thought they’d take but the waves of change had been building long before then. Subtle steps have taken us towards everyday artificial intelligence and the deployment of digital entities that sooth our emotions, help our daily tasks and act as companions at home. And -in case you missed it – that paradigm shift has even greater implications for public relations and communication practice, reshaping our work, redefining the relationships we build, the reputations we guard and the risks and issues we manage. This session looks at the changes and challenges of artificial intelligence, the ethical implications for public relations today and the ways we need to adapt for tomorrow. It will also introduce you to some of the digital entities that are making their presence felt in our lives

The Impact of Research Findings on Agility and “Big Data” in the Practice of Public Relations and Corporate Communication
Don Stacks will overview the uses and types of data used in applied public relations practice. The presentation will examine the uses of “small”, “large”, and “Big” data and how each can advance strategic practice in public relations and corporate communication. A quick mini-case will be look at how “Big Data” might be used in practice.
Don Wright will report on the 2020 PRWeek/Boston University Bellwether Study. Now in its third year this survey of PR professionals details how many external factors have brought to the fore internal challenges that have created an environment where agility has become the major driver of organizational resilience, strength, effective communications and reputation. Agility, respondents indicate, is sine qua non for communicating amidst dramatic change and preparing for a post-corona viral world.
